Iloilo City's Community Kitchens: Addressing Hunger in the COVID-19 Pandemic
COVID-19 is not just a health issue. With community quarantines or lockdowns in place, mobility becomes a challenge triggering more problems that also trigger additional problems. As transportation almost comes to a halt, agricultural produce find it difficult to reach the markets, and eventually the plates. Compounded by the unemployment and economic woes caused by the pandemic, Iloilo City is being threatened by hunger. In this video, Mayor Jerry TreƱas shares how the City Government of Iloilo confronts hunger and how they organized at least 135 Uswag community kitchens. Hence, instead of the city residents asking when they will receive their amelioration support, the Ilongos are asking: What is the menu for the day?
